Around me, the world is beginning to open up. Spring has arrived. Daylight savings time shifted sunset by an hour, even as the days get longer. With flowers blooming, allergies arrive. With warmer air, I am ditching my heavy coat. Workplaces are beginning to announce staggered return to work plans.

I note my response to each of the shifts and announcements. As startling, overwhelming, and scary the changes of the last year were—I do not quite know how to respond to the arrival of the post-COVID world. How have I been changed by the massive shifts in the world and this prolonged period of physical distancing? How do I want to consciously emerge and engage as the world opens up?

Author Daniel Pink in his book When: The Scientific Secrets of Perfect Timing, shares data and insights on what motivates us to begin something or to make change. For example, more people go to the gym on Mondays (typically the start of the workweek) than other weekdays. New Year’s goals or resolutions (effective or not) are a common way to “begin” a new year. Likewise, we might recommit to our goals or start something new on our birthday or the beginning of a season. After reading When, I began to increasingly notice the opportunities to recommit. My Samba dance teacher, Raffaella Falchi, reminds us that we can recommit to our dance at every single downbeat:  1-2-3. 1-2-3. 1-2-3. YES. Always a chance to recommit, to show up, to be present.

The world reopening is a great opportunity to reassess the guardrails and containers in our own lives. What do we want to say yes to? What calls to us? How will we commit to investing in ourselves so we have the reserves and resilience to show up for others?

Bowing to you, the poignancy of the moment, and the power within as we emerge at the precipice.
